SAI란 무엇인가 (What the SAI is)
SAI(학생 지원 지표, Student Aid Index)는 FAFSA 정보로 산정되는 "이 가정이 부담할 수 있는 몫"을 나타내는 지표입니다. (The Student Aid Index (SAI) is the figure computed from your FAFSA data; a college subtracts it from its cost of attendance (COA) to get your financial need. The SAI can go as low as -1,500. A dependent student whose parents were not required to file a U.S. tax return because of low income - including where any foreign income is also below the threshold - is automatically assigned an SAI of -1,500.)
(The federal Pell Grant is also driven by the SAI. For 2026-27 the maximum Pell is $7,395, and the standard formula is Pell = $7,395 maximum - your SAI; if the result falls below the $740 minimum, no Pell is awarded, so under the standard formula an SAI above $6,655 means no Pell. The $14,790 figure (twice the maximum Pell) is not the standard-formula cutoff - it is the SAI ceiling used by a separate path that grants automatic eligibility based on the federal poverty guidelines. The full SAI formula is complex, so this page diagnoses which rules apply to your family rather than computing a number - use the official estimator below for an estimate.)

(Check: which rules apply to your family?)
(Answer three questions and we will lay out the asset-reporting exemption test, how your home is treated depending on college type, and the restored business-asset rule. This check shows likelihood, not a determination - the final call is made when your FAFSA is processed. Question 2 uses the parents of a dependent student; for independent students the same tests apply to you (and your spouse).)
(One premise before you start: if the parents are married, both parents' income and assets are combined - regardless of which country they live in or whether they file taxes separately. The only exceptions are parents who are divorced or legally separated. "Parents" in the questions below means that combined total.)
(Which colleges will you apply to?)
(Was the parents' combined 2024 AGI (Form 1040, line 11) under $60,000?)
(Did the parents file any of Schedules A, B, D, E, F, or H with the 2024 return?)
(Did the parents file Schedule C? If so, what was the combined net profit or loss? If more than one Schedule C was filed, the test uses the total of all of them - the amount on Schedule 1, line 3.)
(Does either parent receive a Schedule K-1 from an S-corporation or a partnership?)
(This question needs its own check: K-1 income is reported on Schedule E, so a parent who receives a K-1 cannot meet the filing-form condition in Question 2-2. The +/-$10,000 exception applies to Schedule C only.)
(Do you run a business or a farm?)
(The business exclusion carries a family ownership-and-control test. An exactly 50:50 partnership, or a business in which the family holds only a minority stake, does not qualify.)
CSS Profile (How assets are treated: FAFSA vs CSS Profile)
(Asset) | FAFSA (2026-27) | CSS Profile |
|---|---|---|
| 단순 임대 부동산 — 상가·주택 (LLC·법인 명의로 보유한 경우 포함) (Plain rental real estate - stores, houses - including property held through an LLC or corporation) | 포함 — 사업체 제외 대상 아님, 순자산(시세 − 대출잔액) 전액 보고.
(Small family business - over 50% family-owned and operated - family farm, family fishing business) | 제외 — 2026-27부터 다시 면제 | 대학 재량 |
(How the CSS Profile counts an asset is each college's own institutional policy, and those standards are not published - so this site does not list per-college figures. Also note: the Asset Protection Allowance is $0 for 2026-27, so reportable assets enter the parent contribution calculation with no allowance, converted at 12%.)

(Tax-return map: which lines the official calculators ask for)
(Official estimators and college net price calculators ultimately ask for specific lines of your 2024 return. Keep the return open and match each prompt against this table.)
| 항목 (Item) | 양식·줄 (Form & line) |
|---|---|
| AGI (조정총소득) | Form 1040, line 11 |
Form 1040, line 24 |
Form 1040 line 1z + Schedule 1 lines 3, 6 |
Form 1040, line 2a |
Form 1040, line 5a − line 5b |
Form 1040 line 29 + Schedule 3 line 3 |
Schedule 1, line 8d |
Schedule C, line 31 |
(Schedule C profit and K-1 Box 1 income are already inside your AGI (Form 1040, line 11), so official calculators take the AGI rather than asking for the K-1 separately. The combined Schedule C amount (Schedule 1, line 3, if more than one was filed) is used separately in the asset-reporting exemption test - that is Question 2-3 in the check above. And because K-1 income is reported on Schedule E, a parent who receives a K-1 cannot meet the exemption's filing-form condition at all - that is Question 2-4.)

(Common misconceptions, corrected)
("The business-asset exclusion is gone" was true for only two award years, 2024-25 and 2025-26. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, restored the exclusion from 2026-27 for businesses with 100 or fewer employees and for farms the family lives on, and extended it to family commercial fishing businesses.)
(Having two children in college at once no longer splits the parent contribution - the old EFC division was removed. Each child gets an SAI built on the full parent contribution.)
(401(k) contributions taken out of W-2 wages are NOT added back to income. The only retirement contributions added back are ones deducted on the tax return - Schedule 1, line 16 (self-employed SEP, SIMPLE, and Keogh plans) and line 20 (IRA deduction).)
(Retirement account balances themselves are not FAFSA assets - 401(k)s, IRAs, pension funds, and ABLE accounts are excluded. Amounts withdrawn, however, count as income to the extent they are untaxed. One warning: a qualified rollover (for example, 401(k) to IRA) is not income, but if you do not enter the rollover amount where the FAFSA asks for it, the full gross distribution can be treated as income.)
